despite their low price, the $79 iris pro scanner is one of the better all-in-one (aio) scanners. you can’t scan directly to a cloud service, but you can scan to a microsd card, which can then be plugged into a computer to be uploaded directly to the cloud. it’s also one of the most feature-rich scanners we’ve tested, with options for text indexing, ocr, and even a photo-editing mode. it comes with a usb cable and a quick start guide but no software.

the $149 polaroid i6 is the only multifunction scanner we’ve tested that includes a document feeder that’s as easy to use as the scanner. you can scan a4, a3, and tabloid-size paper into your computer automatically, and you can adjust the feeder’s cutoff and inversion settings to get the best results. you can scan a page at up to 600 dpi in black and white, and full-color at 400dpi, with resolution options for the images and the original document. it includes a software bundle that enables you to create searchable pdfs, but the included software is a little barebones.

it’s hard to find a better all-in-one all-in-one scanner than the $249 hp scanjet 8550c. it does all the basics, including text indexing, ocr, and black-and-white scanning at up to 2400dpi. the bundled software is a little more robust than that of the other brother and dcp models, and there’s even a bit of photo editing. but the real benefit of this model is that you can scan directly to a cloud storage service such as dropbox, onedrive, or google drive.

the $249 brother dcp-j585dw ($99 after rebate) has everything you could want in a multifunction scanner, and it also has a built-in document feeder that you can use to scan directly to a microsd card. it’s the most feature-rich all-in-one we’ve tested, and it comes with the most comprehensive software bundle. it lacks the ocr and photo editing capabilities of the other models, but it does include text-indexing and black-and-white scanning at up to 2400dpi. its biggest drawback is that the software is only available for windows.

if you’re more interested in converting your screen or photo into an editable document, canon’s canoscan lide 400 is a perfect fit. it’s a handy desktop scanner for one-off document jobs, or if your tasks are more traditional–for example, if you’re a small business just needing to scan your bills for tax time, a city ordinance, or a customer’s order confirmation page for the next meeting–the lide 400 will work just fine. it’s no slouch, either, delivering 35-page duplexing (a4/letter-size) scans in a top-loading tray that offers quick and easy access to the scanner controls. best of all, the lide 400 can also convert photos into editable text files. if you’re looking for a multifunction printer that can do a little bit of everything, the epson workforce wf-2680 fits the bill. it has a conventional adf, which is more common in larger models. it’s also not a cheap little machine; at $289.99, it’s not cheap either. but, as a full-blown document-production device, it’s an exceptional choice. the epson workforce wf-2680 is a full-blown mfp–it’s a great all-around office, but it’s not particularly fast. its speeds don’t put it in the same league as a fax machine, and it can’t scan to a network drive like a network scanner can, so if you need to collate your scanned documents, you’ll need an additional scanner. the xerox workcentric scanner, the company’s first dedicated document scanner, is the first of its kind to offer 24-bit color scanning, transforming a hard copy into a digital document quickly and easily. it’s also faster than its predecessor (the workcentric) and more affordable. although it lacks duplexing functionality, its intuitive touch-screen interface and intuitive software are as useful to the busy office worker as they are to the graphic artist. the workcentric’s color scanning and duplexing are not available in this model, but the workcentric scanner features all the other benefits of xerox’s latest document scanner, including 3,200 dpi scanning. 5ec8ef588b
