i’ve always preferred the straight-up soul of snoop’s early material, but in my mind there’s no better testament to his legacy than reincarnated or doggystyle. both albums are about reincarnation, and though snoop is reborn many times over, they’re his most perfect and brilliantly executed incarnations. doggystyle is easily his most highly-rated and best-selling album, and reincarnated is a perfect, unadulterated return to what snoop does best. that’s the kind of thing that makes you re-evaluate your entire legacy. the fact that doggystylesays he’s the best rapper alive on the cover, when he knew damn well that he wasnt, is just the icing on the cake. so when you least expect it, and you least expect it, snoop and his longtime cohorts daz dillinger and kurupt reemerge on what sounds like a podcast or podcast-adjacent project, on the run. snoops rapping, rapping, and rapping, kurupts bass is so tight and dillinger s drums so funky that it almost sounds like a full-fledged group album. but it doesn t feel like it, and when the last track arrives, it doesn t even have a hook. it doesn t matter. the main problem with on the run is that it just feels too much like a one-off. im not saying that you have to get an album like doggystyle or tha doggfather out every time snoop makes a new record. but every snoop project should have the conviction and consistency of an actual project. then again, the problem may just be that on the run was just too long. there are no skits, no inside jokes, no real theme. there are just songs. many of them are really good songs, but theyre so single-minded that the project feels like it shouldve been just as long as the 40 minutes of music itself. if you make a new snoop album, dont make it this long. not even for a sign of bravery. 5ec8ef588b
