Anyway, the game gets underway with Rance wandering into a local town in search of some slaves. Sex happens every time we wander into a town. There are no towns in this game. Rance finds Sill and the two head for a hot spring village, which happens to be under the control of some powerful general called Kou. (Not to be confused with Kou of the Oda family. Theres no connection at all.) The villagers are too lazy and afraid to look at the strange blond man and his slave Sill, and so Rance is able to proceed right to sex.

Sex in Rances world happens in many different ways. Theres no following up after Rance is done, so there is no resolution. There are a few possible endings, but no true “sex route” path. The female characters are not named. The names Sill and Kou come from Rance and his slave Sill. There are even female NPCs from Rance’s slave to encounter, despite his only having a slave. This is the only way in which Rance’s sexuality is addressed.

The graphics in Rance are rather basic compared to Kagero. The characters are still pretty much transparent, and so the only way to distinguish one from another is by their hair and clothes. There is a handful of text and dialogue boxes, and most of those are used to advance the game. Theres no sound, although there is background music for battle scenes. There is no intro for the game, and no credits. There are two endings, and there is one ending “just for sex” as the developers put it. (And I should add that they meant for Kagero in general.)

Theres not a whole lot of strategy in Rance, but it might as well be. There are about a dozen menus, one of which is the main map. Theres a lot of equipment, from shields to other body parts, and two kinds of spells (female ninjas carry a wand). There are five possible characters to select from, and some are unlocked by certain means (the only way to unlock characters in Kagero is to gain breast size).
At the end of a battle Rance is given an ability point, and can use it to buy equipment or change character stats (for example, go into first-person mode for increased accuracy.) It cant be “equipped” as such, so there is no “armor” or “damage” meter, but rather a dot is placed on the character’s health bar. When a character is about to use their movement spell there is a countdown, and the moment it reaches 0 is the moment that they launch their spell. There is no order in which the spells are used, so the only thing you can do is prepare the spell you want to use first, and the results are the same each time.
Theres about a dozen weapons, from knives, to greatswords. There are special attacks, and some of the weapons have sets of different attacks on their side. When a character has a weapon equipped, there is a chance that the character will use a special attack, and the chances for such attacks get higher as the character gets more health.
