Bashkors as producer and Sircars as director and actor, the latter in the title role, create a film which has a decent premise, the results of which are uneven. Sircars film works as a character-study of how he deals with major upheavals in his life, the first of which is his marriage, an arrangement that is not to his liking. Pikus marital difficulties are only alluded to, but this isnt too much of a concern given how film only focuses on the main plot. At this point, the two-and-a-half-hour film disappoints by trying to transcend its means to an extent that its taut and effective resolution is lost in a kind of rationalization. Sircar seems to be playing with the idea that emotions can be annulled by reason. In the process, Pikus plight comes to seem like an excuse for a very satisfying vision of the city of Calcutta. The film, which began as a study of an underprivileged protagonist living in a city that he seems to hate, ends up as a study of the city itself, whose parochial outlook is an ideal backdrop for Sircars warped take on a man who, like piku himself, is a victim of his own confusions.
