Cracking open the expansion menu, I realize that the Developers hint at a truly enormous map and wonder how much is going to be crammed into this thing! I start with Alfred and the Normans in England (A-5) and find out that there is lots of new stuff to do and see. There is a new tech line, the passive rise of Muslims, to try to convert to Sunni Islam. I quickly realize that this one is tougher than the first (Voluntary Repudiation), because even if the Christian is from the third feudal level, they have a base penalty to conversion. Also a new political system, the Imamate, which is the Islamic equivalent to Feudalism, I guess. And of course, there is the blood feud system that was introduced in the second CKII expansion, Feudal Elective Kings. But this is a bit different; instead of having to be the heir to a duchy to start a blood feud, you have to be either a leader of a faction or a person in the house of a leader of a faction, or you can be the heir of a leader of a faction. In addition, you can only be in a feud with someone who is also in a feud with you. Now if you’re in the same faction as the enemy, that’s a great start! Also unique to this expansion is the fact that all your vassals are of one faith and are thus, automatically vassals of each other. This is in contrast to the first CKII expansion, where you could have vassals of two faiths, and vassals of each other could be of either faith. So in the first case, it was important to carefully choose who to ally with, because they were your vassals, and thus you would probably be fighting the faction’s enemies.
