the game starts with a pleasant fmv. there are four students that get stranded in diregrove without any means of communication. they send a message with a video camera to their professor who is in london. at the beginning of each chapter, you need to work your way back to the house to find the next clue.

we start out with an easy adventure, but soon run into more troubles and more choices. you need to solve the cases to get back to the beginning of the chapter. after a few characters die, more choices come up. now you can beat up the person and take his picture, which i don’t like. you also can pick a possible ending. i went with the good ending because it seemed to be the most logical one. i don’t know if there is a wrong or right answer. if you know there is a wrong answer, please tell me.

were not there for a gaggle of people nor to save them either. sadly, we are there to discover what exactly has happened in dire grove, and that is not a role for which im suited. what we initially play through is a three-part introductory adventure that lays the groundwork for the larger mysteries of later games. the first is an animal-poisoning mystery complete with weaponized monkeys, poisoned balloons, and a bomb-hurling boa constrictor; the second involves the murders of several professors at a local research institution; and the third is a search for a missing, scientist dr. koffler.

each of these stories are genuinely chilling, and whats interesting is that the central character of all three is an unusual fictional entity: an amnesiac with no memories, who the player must help find herself. in the first case, with the help of the chatty secretary, youre able to start asking questions about yourself; if not, youre forced to find out the hard way. finding the players identity is the main theme of the second story, even if its less than satisfying. and the third centers around the doctor, and that is the real heart of this game. the doctor herself is a riddle that must be solved, and you have to actually do it for yourself, because theres no rewindable time travel.
