we use the encoder in all of our 5.1 production applications. we found it to be very reliable, easy to use, and the files it produces sound great. it’s our current favorite surround encoder. in the case of our review of version 2 of the encoder, we called it the muse of encoders. it’s the best you can buy for single audio tracks. it’s also very fast. version 3 adds a display for mixing in stereo. as always, the encoder includes all the options available on the full-featured surcode for dolby 5.1 encoder. it doesn’t do anything that the surcode doesn’t. but what it does do, it does really well. it provides accurate surround and stereo mixing, loro in/out, and built-in metering and loudness management. version 3 also includes a raw input that provides a “dry” or unprocessed mix. this is especially useful for monitoring in stereo mixes that will be mixed down to 5.1 or 7.1.
versions 1-2 of the encoder are fairly straightforward, but version 3 adds a multichannel input and a display for mixing stereo. in the process of review we noticed that there is no documentation or example projects available for version 3. we are still hoping that some of you can put this plug-in to good use and let us know what you think of it. surcode for dolby digital encoder version 3 is available from minnetonka audio for $349.95.
surcode for dolby digital 5.1 encoder is the most intuitive of the three plug-ins. it’s comprehensive, but easy to use. it includes all the options available on the full-featured version of the surcode for dolby 5.1 encoder, including the encoder’s output, real-time editing, monitoring, loudness management, and decoding. surcode for dolby 5.1 encoder is designed for pro tools users familiar with the desktop version of the program. it does not include a mixer or multiple inputs. the encoder includes a display for stereo monitoring and mixing. it also includes a small input panel. it’s important to note that the encoder is available in a 32-bit version for use with pro tools 10, and a 64-bit version for use with pro tools 11.
