Or did the fund move “short” by buying the actual commodity? This could be a problem. In our experience, any futures speculator is at the mercy of wrong data, bad models or plain dumb luck, and that’s before futures markets themselves start to get involved. As our dealer friends tell us (guest notwithstanding), speculation is not risk management. Speculation is akin to putting a gun to your temples and hoping for one more bullet. Mark Asset’s strategy is somewhat unique in style and real execution. More like a futures market linchpin of sorts, and right on time as the corn market ran into a brick wall on Aug. 1.
