The installation included a factory default set of applications, including Firefox (Which I deleted), and access to Linux software. I was somewhat disappointed, and I thought that the Linux software might at least include xmms, mplayer, and mplayer2. Other than Firefox, nothing else really stood out, which is a really bad thing, especially since the Windows software Linspire includes was ALREADY installed. Some of the applications had a 1/2 way transparent blue colored background, which wasnt there with Fedora (I saw a pink one here and there though). The Windows apps also have been modified to work better (ie w32codecs, which you must add manually on Fedora), and there was an instance where I received an error message when I first switched to the Gnome Desktop, which had me come back to the LiveCD desktop, and reboot, which was annoying.

One of the main reasons I started writing this review was to spread the word to the Linux community about Ubuntu. I personally have decided to no longer use or promote this distribution. I feel that Linspire would have many more hits in the marketplace if it wasnt affiliated with Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a great operating system, because of its large user base, and its users are very helpful to other users, but it doesnt offer anything that is not already found in any other Linux distribution. Since all my time at work is already dedicated to Ubuntu, to try another one just wouldnt be a very good use of time for me. The “Ubuntu way” is simply not for me, and I dont want to support a company that is using Ubuntu, and then going on to make money off this operating system. I feel its a chain of events that Linspire should avoid, and start their own operating system. With the new Internet Explorer 9, they should be able to do it for nothing, and have some good luck.




check out the linspire 6.0 overview page for more info about what it has to offer. it may have some new features in it, and may have some new bugs too. we fixed all of the bugs that we had reported in beta 1 in the last few days, and some new ones have been reported. if you have already downloaded linspire 6.0, you can find the linspire 6.0 iso images in your download folder. if you have not already downloaded linspire 6.0 iso images on the download page. to use linspire 6.0, you must use the linspire 6.0 boot disk, not the linspire 5.0 or linspire 5.0.1 boot disk. once the factory was destroyed, linspire came back to life as linpus. no more “linspire”, they have a whole new marketing/naming strategy in place. they are also going to concentrate on a few core products (think of it as linspire 6.0), and then ship with linspire 7.0, which is a complete rework of linpus 6.0. in other news, at the moment, ubuntu is holding the position, with more “raw power” and “polish” than i can even imagine. to be honest, i like the ubuntu’s approach, to go for the “good and the best”, even if it’s not quite as polished as linspire. so, the developers of linpus are not only looking forward to the future, but also to some fresh ideas and modern concepts. the good news is that they have already kicked the can down the road with the linspire 7.0 beta, and am pretty sure that am going to have a linspire 7.0 install on the go in a couple of months, as i am getting two of them on one workstation. next, you can expect to see a lot of discussion regarding the advantages, and disadvantages of a “complete” overhaul, and whether they should go the way of suse and concentrate on a few core products (linux) and then ship with linspire 7.0. 5ec8ef588b
