A single-center, open-label study was conducted to examine the effect of methadone on opiate addiction and chronic pain. Pain levels in 117 patients (44% female), starting methadone during a stabilization phase for a mean of 8 weeks, and followed for a mean of 56.8 weeks (standard deviation = 33.7) were analyzed using categorical rating scales, visual analog scales, and the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Co-morbidities were the following: opioid substitution treatment (OST) in 28% (33 patients), cardiovascular in 27% (32 patients), diabetes mellitus (DM) in 15% (18 patients), and osteoporosis in 1% (1 patient).
