The volatile compounds of Giardia duodenalis trophozoites (infective stages) obtained by aqueous freeze-drying and rehydration in air were analysed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The amounts of alpha-pinene obtained by fresh trophozoites were 3.9 microg/gdry cells, but it was significantly increased to 13.6 microg/gdry cells when the parasites were freeze-dried and rehydrated with 0.1 M L-cysteine. A high relative concentration of other compounds such as iso-alpha-pinene, eucalyptol, menthol and p-cymene was found in trophozoites than in cysts. The change of the volatile compounds during freezing, freeze-drying and rehydration was also studied. Although the volatile compounds of freezing-dried trophozoites still contained alpha-pinene and iso-alpha-pinene, they had not changed significantly after rehydration in air for 1 day.
