overall, sampletank has a friendly, easy-to-use interface, but the program doesn’t really add that much to your mobile music production experience. its piano, synth and percussion samples are a joy to use, and the program’s settings panel is also simple and easy to use. but its sequencer is simple, and it doesn’t do much to enhance your workflow beyond what you can do in other daws. the range of effects that it offers is, if anything, a little too generous.
sampletank is a pleasant alternative to cubase sx or logic pro. it’s a great way of making, say, a song out of a loop from an old piece of classical music that you like, and it’s a useful way of capturing a few ideas on a midi keyboard and then applying them to a midi sequence using the samples. it’s also a good alternative to a laptop or desktop daw, as it does a decent job of capturing the sound of a midi keyboard, albeit with its own quirks.
nevertheless, both sampletank and hypersonic offer a variety of synth sounds that are better than most of their competitors, and the level of detail in the samples they contain is generally high. so what’s missing? well, it’s not impossible to get some of the more subtle, multi-sampled synth sounds in the akai libraries, but what’s really lacking is a real-world, plugged-in analogue synth. again, there’s a reason that the benchmark synth that comes with sampletank was an emulation, and that, more than any other element, is the reason why this instrument remains a perennial favourite with samplists.
the new functions do make sampletank2 a better and more versatile means of playing back samples than version1, but they wouldn’t make a serious samplist choose it over exs24 or gigastudio. at root, it’s still the samples themselves that will determine whether sampletank2 flies off the shelves or gathers dust on them. there’s nowhere else you can get the factory sounds, they’re still presented in a very convenient format, new instruments and programs have been added in version2, and in its strong areas drums, basses, organs, percussion and so on it still offers some of the best sounds around. yet there is now more competition out there than was the case two years ago; and while sampletank xl 2’s 4.5gb library is almost double the size of the original, the library as a whole is not twice as good. the orchestral sounds show signs of improvement, for instance, but i still wouldn’t use the solo strings in any kind of exposed role, stretched or not.
