“Balthazar’s Dream” is inspired by the Turok and Oddworld series, and consists of an episodic campaign with several short levels in each episode. You play as Balthazar, a dog who accidentally gets hit by a truck and goes into a coma. His dog, Chauvet, senses a presence of two entities, who are looking for something in the dream world. For Chauvet, the world of the dreams is the “real world”. To save his friend, Balthazar has to find the entities and go through the dream world, where he will have to play tricks on them in order to find out what they’re really after. The story and his quest for the kid are narratively told through a series of short levels. The gameplay consists of platforming sections, where the dog is able to run, jump and even climb on walls, as well as puzzle solving sections, in which you have to figure out how to manipulate the environment to get to the next platform. You can choose between three different breeds of dogs to play as. Balthazar the German Shepard is a lot more powerful than the other two, but he is much bigger as well and therefore not as agile. The game offers a variety of dogfights, in which you have to jump over obstacles or shoot them with a special attack, and nice graphic effects. For the first time ever, dog lovers will be able to play with their dogs in their dreams – and this time, it’s really a dream! About the Game Design: All levels in the game share a basic structure: you start off on a ground-level, walk to a next level, walk up the stairs and then you finish with a battle on the next level. Some levels have a whole lot of ladder/ladder-like stairs, some have a bit more variety on the level design, but all levels have an obstacle that you need to scale. The environments are designed in the spirit of 2D platformers, but also have a little bit of 3D-ness to them. All the levels are made in the Unreal engine 3.0.
