a player can accept or reject a mission, but only if they are ready to face the risks of an on-the-spot contract. a mission can take between 3 and 5 minutes, and will begin with a countdown timer showing how much time remains. while completing the mission, players are able to gather salvageable parts from the battlefield, which can be sold to other players or merchant units and used to upgrade their battlemechs.

in order to finish a mission, a player must eliminate all enemies on the battlefield and then repair all damaged battlemechs. failure to eliminate all enemies or complete the mission before time expires results in a loss of earnings, and a payout based on the total time spent on the mission. the player may be able to renegotiate an improved payout if they have a good reputation or are too late to cancel the mission.

missions can be completed on the ground or in the air. ground missions involve a standard mission briefing and control screen, but players are unable to move during the mission. the only means of movement is to fire the fire the left mouse button. the controls may be reconfigured in the in-game options menu.

the player is given a level of protection, ranging from a battlemech-mounted shield to a full-scale bubble-cam. each of these provides a different level of protection and a different view angle of the battlefield. all of the levels can be upgraded, and the view angle can be rotated or disabled entirely.

the player can choose to carry only a few small items, like a small backpack or a portable repair kit, or a full load of salvaged parts and battlemechs. additionally, a “full load” can be split into multiple loadouts, so players can carry only the parts and mechs they want.

as other players are playing as what are often referred to as taunts, the accompanying grunt is outfitted with an ecm gun, and must either shoot the ecm emitter on the taunts weapons, or take it down. as with the mech gunner skill, the ecm gunner also has the ability to fire in a 360 degree arc while stationary, and the ability to target a moving target. players can interact with their fellow players in a variety of ways. the main options are called “mission chat” and “socialize.” players chat with each other through a voice comms system, and will be able to converse with each other no matter what game mode they are in. players can also chat with non-player characters in both the scripted and free-play sections of the game. socializing with non-players is based on an honor system. the non-player characters will call you by your name and will say “hi” to you. this makes for a nice change from regular online shooters. the visuals are crisp and consistent. when played at the default settings, the game presents a level of detail that players who like sims and driving games will appreciate. enemy soldiers/gunners/tanks are fairly well detailed for the most part, and the frames are somewhat pixellated at times as the game features a lot of outdoor locales. it still looks decent, though. early on, mechwarrior online’s focus on the actual twitch mechanics of the game becomes clear. in-game actions respond to outside factors, such as the speed of your character or the direction of your jumps. no other online pc game lets you call in a carpet drone and watch it swarm over and pick off multiple enemies. only a game as dynamically interesting as mechwarrior online could wring this kind of response out of a moment-to-moment experience like this. 5ec8ef588b
