The original piece was made in brass stamping technique. When I first saw this piece, I immediately thought “how beautiful!” At the time, I was really trying to push myself to make something interesting and it helped that the first piece was so simplistic. I like the way how simple it was, but in a really beautiful way. Fast forward four years. The first piece is showing signs of damage (and in my opinion, fading). I decided to re-style it using the same technique but this time, I focused more on pattern and color. I think that with the new piece, the layering and the color works well together and accents the pattern found within the fabric. This portrait was done in my Art Productions Art and Jewelry class at Maui Arts and Cultural Center, the only place where a 7-day beginners course was offered in Hawaii back then. The other students had chosen a really simple subject for beginners—the Chinese zodiac—but they were not sure what their own style should be. So, they were all putting a “40 percent law” technique in every assignment, but in a case where the method is not one of their own choosing, it seems unhelpful.
