The Season Four: No One Takes a Bath is the worst Friends season of all! There was just no way to make this a good episode. Seriously, I love it when characters have a bath. A few of these came out of nowhere, others happened unexpectedly and were good, but ‘No One Takes a Bath’ involves Chandler having an attitude over Ross needing to shave, and…oh. That’s it. Basically, this is the episode where Joey buys a truck and learns about cars. It’s a very strange episode, especially when you notice Chandler’s fear of the end of the world when he’s told about the apocalypse. This episode also brings us the return of the token female, Phoebe’s new roommate Charlotte.
Say what you want about the Friends episodes that never captured the greatness of this show. I still love some of them. The One with the big fish tank does Chandler proposing, the finale, the wedding episode, and the drunken-sex episode, for example. But the Friends season-ending episodes are perfect. And this episode is the one that I think makes them the best. The episode begins as a typical Friends episode. Phoebe invites her best friends over to congratulate her on getting her dream job at the firm. It’s a great Friends moment. But it soon turns to the story that we’ve all been waiting for. The show that we all know and love is ending soon. The future seems unclear, but it’s a wonderful ending. It’s a fun episode, but it’s also a heartbreaking one.
…and we end the show like it should, on an all-out binge! Friends is the kind of show that always has a way to surprise. It’s the kind of show where you need to be present to take in all the emotions and connections, not those that record it. There’s no way to look back and still be moved by the events you were a part of. But this finale – in which the series is fully resolved, at least for now – still has a way to upset you. It’s the last episode of Friends, with a series-ending wedding (that, like Chandler and Rachel’s, is crashed and destroyed later on) and a final decision that shocks and opens up new opportunities.
