There are four tensile loading modes that can lead to the development of cracks: shear, tension, bending, and torsion. The first three modes have the crack as their axis of symmetry. However, any crack in a solid will rotate if it is loaded in torsion. As the crack rotates, the surface which it faces undergoes a change in direction, and the distribution of stress is no longer normal to the crack face. Because of this, the torsional effect will reduce the force on a crack and cause it to rotate during load. This is the primary reason for the relationship between torsion and rotation in shear and tension.
