a good lid makes a huge difference in keeping the cubes in one piece. the rubber lid icy pusher fits nicely on the top of our 10 ice cube trays and seems to be very effective. it also fits on a whole bunch of other molds, including those for ice pops.

if youre concerned about bacteria, the silicone trays are not recommended for making ice cream. but they can be used to make ice cubes, because as long as the trays are stored in a freezer, bacteria can never grow on them.

when we did a trial test with the four different ice cube molds, we found that an ice cube tray with half-moons or prisms is a better choice. its just easier to remove an ice cube from a half-moon than it is from a prism.

we tried two designs for our ice cube mold. when the ice cubes are formed, they get sandwiched between two perforated sheets of styrofoam. the sheets form a rough fit for the inside of our ice cube mold, and the ice cubes drop through into the mold.

the silicone molds were easy to fill. but a silicone mold can be tricky to remove once the cubes have frozen. some designs are easy to get out of, and others arent. but regardless of the design, they have a hard time snapping free. some designs release ice cubes in pieces, so the cubes have to be broken apart manually.
