Article 21 of the Constitution of India guarantees to all persons the right to life with dignity. The dignity of the human being consists not merely in his personality but in certain inalienable rights of human nature which he has from his birth and which cannot be contracted away. The right to life is obviously such an inalienable right. It is the right to live and not to die. The right to die is also an inalienable right, but it is only one aspect of the right to live. It does not prevent a state from granting to an individual dying a more rapid death if it thinks fit, as the general and public interest may require. It does not prevent a state from using every known method of alleviating pain, and of enabling the individual to perform the last duties to his friends and family. All these are part of the inalienable right of life. One person may not use force to save another from death, but he may not live, by the same token, to prevent another from dying.
