if youre working with a client and you need to present complex drawings such as building plans it can be difficult to show only the sections of the drawing that you need to to help your client understand what youre working on. after you present them a section of the drawing, youll need to make it easy for them to understand your next presentation by simply viewing the sections in any of a number of different ways. theres a free tool called 3d pdf importer from oasis that lets you convert any 2d pdf into a 3d pdf format. once youve converted your pdf into a 3d pdf format you can convert it to any of a number of different file formats for viewing.
this is a tutorial showing how to use autocad to convert into a 3d pdf and then how to use adobe acrobat to convert that pdf into a 3d model. that 3d model can then be viewed in a 3d program like solid edge.

another nice thing about the new pdf format is that you can embed an array of layers that are all scaled and sized. it will even scale and size all layers that you add to the pdf using the autodesk 3d viewer program to create the layer pdf. the included reference pdf shows each of the layers added to the generated pdf. you can select the layers and the individual layers can be scaled. of course youll need to have a program to write the resulting pdf from autodesk 3d viewer. for this session autodesk recommends using adobe acrobat pro to convert the layers to an stl file which can be viewed in autodesk 3d viewer. if that is beyond your skill level, then your other choices would be microsoft word or apple pages. when selecting the layers, you can customize the order of the layers and you can exclude some of the layers if you dont need them. of course if youre using autodesk 3d viewer you can customize the layers to be included in the generated pdf. for more information on how to create layers, view the 3d modeling techniques article on layered 3d pdf file format.
