Steiner points have long been used for the separation of the routes of materials in a facility, and they are quite suitable for illustrating the differences between the factors considered when designing a layout. A brief history of the development of the Steiner points is described in the slide set. An explanatory example illustrating the different factors that affect the flow in a layout is given in the slide set. Different methods for measuring the importance of factors affecting flow patterns are described. Methods for planning a layout are presented. These methods include selecting a design objective, selecting zones, using flow dominance, and selecting a layout type, among others.

The three basic layout types are free layout, group layout, and packet layout. I use the same example as in the slide set to describe the differences in the three layout types. Similar results are obtained from the case for free and group layout. The differences in the layout and the choice of design criterion are interesting and useful.
