this worked well for me, but i wanted to make sure it did not break any of the features in the converted pdf. this would be the case if i selected a file to import into a later stage in pagemaker that was not already in a pdf format. i downloaded the export and converted the document first.

as expected, the pdf worked fine as a printable document, but was no longer interactive with any software that had access to pdf functionality (like adobe acrobat).

unlike traditional browsers that slow to a crawl whenever you navigate to a web site with lots of graphics, adobe’s own pdf browser–adobe reader–is speedy no matter what the document contains. and in producing two pdf files at one time, pagemaker 7.0 makes the common pdf generation process far more efficient and error-free than in past versions.

an’ say goodbye to control panel
pagemaker 7.0’s new “control panel” replaces the old one, which had to be opened by clicking on a specific button. the control panel serves as a window for accessing most of pagemaker’s features, including commands for opening and saving documents, exporting documents to other formats, converting documents to pdf, and so on. plus, its buttons now appear at the bottom of the main program window, rather than on a second panel that runs along the side of the document window.

pagemaker 7.0 does a good job of exporting and optimizing pdf files. when you output a document directly from the application to a pdf file, it’s a fast process that generates both a standard pdf file and a special-format file for use with mobile devices. we exported our newsletter and then had it printed with a high-quality printer.




importantly, if you have to convert to pdf for some reason, youll lose some of the special effects that pagemaker provides for typography and graphics. you can export to other file types, such as text or tabbed streams, but they wont contain the same special functions. create output: there’s a new program called output that lets you create output for any type of document in a single action. output is a somewhat confusing name. if youre doing document prep in pagemaker, output creates a pdf file of your wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) document and saves it. if you’re working with a graphics file or a flash file, youll get a pdf or postscript file (depending on the types of files youve inserted), and output copies the files to your hard drive. you can create xrefs of your content and create hyperlinks as well as place images, document sections, or entire pages of a document into the output. output integrates perfectly into pagemaker, which makes it easy to manage all your output with a single tool. distiller 7.0 provides the same environment for creating both pdf files and postscript files. pdf files have many of the same features as pagemaker output. for instance, pdfs include full support for graphics, xml-based documents, cross-reference types, and pdf security. with pdfs, you can also apply content filters to text, graphics, and fonts. distiller can also create postscript files, but it adds a few extra features, including support for ink, layer groups, and pattern fills. with postscript, you can convert a wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) pagemaker document to a printer-ready design that can be sent to any postscript printer, including laser printers. (the default postscript file is a common, printer-ready format that can be used for printing in many cases.) in addition, you can create xrefs to paste into the document, and apply both forward and reverse links to content. you can also use paged images as background or button images. as a result, distiller provides an easy way to integrate and create printing jobs with your pagemaker documents. 5ec8ef588b
