All of these improvements are not enough to mask the game flaws, though: low quality textures, mostly poorly modeled and shaded soldiers, and very basic levels that lack any semblance of either fun or challenge, though the music in the game often helps contribute to the experience. The game plays just like the other 3D shooters that came before it: Many gun targets are hard to hit, and enemies are often hard to see, but where the game stands out is that like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D cant be queued up, and the game plays in real time. The action is usually fast-paced and fun, but it does not have any proper rhythm or enemy spawning or fighting strategy. The best part of the game is not the destructible environments or how creative your kills are, but the fact that when the action slows down, and youre out of ammo, you just gain another life. Although there are maps where you play as a tank, jumping from map to map with unlimited lives and health is not possible, instead you must run the length of one map before returning to the starting point and reliving the action.
The Sega CD had a few games that could only be played by turning the console upside down, though it did have a few 3D shooters, most notablyWolfenstein 3D,Prince of Persia, andLords of Thunder, though the latter two are somewhat disappointing for 3D shooters since the difficulty level is so high (at that time), and the slow pace of the action is slow. The Sega CD version ofWolfenstein 3Dis much better than the Amiga port, actually playing the same as the PC version and leaving out the boring popups. Unlike the Amiga port, the PC version of the CD release features full high-resolution graphics, and some of the enemies reappear in the greenhouse stage, though it requires the use of a cheat engine to find their locations. On the Sega CD, this is a lot of work for such a minor speed increase, but the fans enjoy the gameplay.
This version of the game features the entire original shareware episode, as well as all six episodes from the official distribution on Steam. The only noticeable difference from the version above is that there is no option for the Save Game Manager. The patch includes all of the modernized original Wolfenstein engine improvements, and a few graphical improvements, but sadly the game engine still has a few key issues (player movement is still super jumpy). This version had the cheat codes translated into the language of the game’s original German voice actors, and had all sound digitized and rechanneled through two Sega Genesis game carts as opposed to the four original PC Sound Blaster card. Like the arcade release, it had a modified version of the automap, which wasn’t all that functional and had several graphical and audio bugs. The W.D.T. also released a portable version of the game, the Wolfenstein on Wheels. In it, the game runs on an SD Card, and as the name implies, all of the game levels have been shrunk down to fit on the card, using some of the blank space to add an automap, additional Save States, and a code challenge mode of 10,000 codes. The automap also has some semi-legal tricks, such as overlaying larger images over the automap images on zoomed-out maps, so that the high-resolution automap isn’t immediately visible to players, and hiding the in-game screen of a map’s zoomed-out region to make it harder to find the cheat codes, and hiding them in the automap itself to make them easier to find. 5ec8ef588b
