When water is trapped behind the brick or mortar joints it is called water infiltration or water wedging. This is most common in areas that get a large amount of precipitation year round like Cleveland. Water infiltration into mortar joints can cause the mortar to crack or even cause it to delaminate. This can ultimately result in the mortar crumbling away and the top brick to drop away.

The brick and mortar joints in the brick and mortar walls along the chimney flue and any cracks found in the walls will be sealed. This will prevent moisture from flowing behind the masonry and allow for maximum heating efficiency to be maintained.

If you have any doubts about the sealing of cracks, you can take a test to prove that the mortar has effectively sealed the problem area. To identify whether the sealant was properly applied or not, you can take an outdoor chimney draft tester and test the chimney to see if there is any draft produced. If there is a draft, the mortar will not be able to be sealed properly. We will know that your chimney is sealed based on the results of this test.

If there are only a few cracks in the mortar then you can use a little paintbrush to cover these cracks without having to touch the mortar. Be careful to only cover the cracks and make sure you dont let the paint touch the mortar. Using a paintbrush is also the safest method of paint application. Make sure the paint is dry before you start adding the mortar. When you are done apply the mortar. Lightly tap with a blunt object such as a stick to help smooth out the joints.
