His fight for the farmer’s innocence was remarkable. He told the media that the government’s decision to cancel the award was a conspiracy to hide the truth. He also said the government was scared of his questioning the system as he had won the fight by himself. His fight was rewarded with a few years in jail, and a landmark decision was delivered by the Supreme Court of India. Justice Chandrachud gave the judgement on the plea by Amrik Singh, saying that, “the judgment of the High Court is set aside. The order of the Court is quashed, and the proceeding is set aside. The appellant (Amrik Singh) is acquitted, and discharged from the criminal proceedings.” Unfortunately, the legal battle was not yet over. Amrik Singh filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court to stop the Centre from awarding Padma Shri to Singh on the grounds of infringement of the right to privacy. The judgment was reserved for October 11, 2006. Two days before the judgement, Amrik Singh was shot in front of his home. He survived but was in a critical condition. The police had no hard evidence on who killed him and filed an FIR under Section 302 of the IPC. The three accused were Akhtar, Iqbal and Samjhi.
