Somewhere in the middle of a period of profligate activity, their later days, when Aerosmith’s luster had long faded and many of its members were struggling (singer Joe Perry is the only one who has remained active), the band finally hired the right producer to give the old band a shot of youth and energy. Producer Glyn Johns did so with his usual potency, cluing in the quintet to a folk-metal sound: Trent Reznor, Of all the tracks that Aerosmith produced on their aptly titled No More Tears, the Trent Reznor-penned Broken was the best realized, and No More Tears marks the first time that a band had hired a full-time engineer. The album proved that Aerosmith was still good and vital, even after their commercial heyday had waned, but few Aerosmith fans clamored for a No More Tears retrospective. While many fans wanted to hear the songs from Permanent Vacation — and many of the better songs from Permanent Vacation have been included in the boxed set — the collection lacks significant hits. Aerosmith: The Best of Aerosmith, a 32-track sampler, while not included here, is still a solid sampler of the breadth of their catalog. So why add a five-song retrospective that makes for an oddly satisfying double-shot? Perhaps because this is the closest that No More Tears can come to being really good.
In 1999, Aerosmith took their perennial Rock & Roll Hall of Fame acceptance to the skies. Now, here in the dawning era of the 21st century, the rocker look back at the band — in multiple releases including their best-selling compilations, as well as most of their top albums and hit singles — with seven CDs that are divided into three eras of their career.
Aside from 1996’s live set, recorded in Toronto in front of 35,000 fans, the group didn’t release another studio CD until 2006’s Honkin’ on Bobo. It was worth the wait. Aerosmith didn’t rush this one; they just went back to the basics and allowed the songs to shine by recording them as the group of friends and brothers that made them great. The results were stunning, with songs that still sound fresh (I’m Gonna Miss You, Holidays and Round Here) and that still pull punches (Pretty Fly for a White Guy and After the Storm) that make you look at the band askance and want to slap them when you think you’ve finally figured them out. But the band are never a simple story. They’ve always been thorny people, with mood swings, all-out fits and prolonged battles for the spotlight. And they’re still, in 2018, fighting for artistic control and the right to make their own songs, and be-they’re artists and heirs to the legacy of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band to ever cross your paths. You can get a look behind the scenes at that fight and some insights on the making of Pandemonium from their recently released live album Aerosmith Live 2013, out this week. And although it’s almost been two years since the band’s breakthrough album and massive reunion, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention how Aerosmith are due to come back in one of rock history’s biggest stories: The inevitable, #1-charting, Billboard-certified comeback of their pioneering 1990s debut album Permanent Vacation.
