weapons are the most important feature in tomb raider 4. lara can now buy upgrades for her crossbow, revolver, and gun. as mentioned before, her crossbow now has laser sights and can be upgraded with lasers. she can now upgrade the revolver from the shotgun to the revolver. the gun can now be upgraded to have two additional ammo. all three weapons have their own attributes, similar to how the previous games have. you can see the attributes for yourself in the image below:
the new character abilities allow lara to perform stunts and recover from falls. to access these abilities, the player will have to perform a series of actions at specific times while in the middle of an action sequence. the player must, for instance, perform a specific action while on a ledge. in tomb raider 4, the player can perform two stunts per game. these stunts will not show up in the stats screen, but they will be accessible by pressing the “s” key during the game.
the sound in this game are slightly improved as well. sound effects have better variation and the music is generally better played. however, i found the music to be very repetitive. perhaps it is not as bad in the other games, but this was the first time i played the last revelation, and it played the same music track over and over again. so, if you are playing this game for the first time, you might want to avoid this soundtrack.
the game play is essentially the same as it was in the past. lara can use her jump kick to jump on ledges, her hand can be used to grab objects, and she can press the control pad to sprint, rotate to look in different directions, and to climb up and down various walls. lara can also swim, ride a horse, and climb on and off vehicles (such as the jeep in the first level). once she gets to the second level, lara can jump off vehicles and hang on to them to swing across gaps. there are also a lot of new puzzles. for example, the first level features a puzzle that involves walking in a circle around a tower. lara can use the rope swings to traverse the area around the tower, but she can’t walk to the exact center, as it is too far away. it is possible to reach the center by first walking to one side of the tower, then jumping to the other side and grabbing the rope. there are also puzzles involving ropes that hang from the top of a level, and they must be used to get to the next level. other puzzles include rope bridges that must be slid down to get to the other side. if you need help, the on-screen help system is still there, and you can even use the touch screen to indicate where you want to go.
