security researchers have discovered a new ransomware brand called storagecrypter that takes advantage of a previously unknown privilege escalation vulnerability in xfs filesystems. the attack occurs when the affected device’s operating system is vulnerable to this vulnerability, which is patched in freebsd 10, but not in linux yet.
ransomware attacks are made up of many different parts. the ransomware itself is only one part, but it is the easiest part to identify and study because it is the only part of the attack that users and security researchers see.

and it has issues with information security: the filenames are too long and contain no obfuscation. the filenames contain a predictable structure and content; any modern ids may be able to look at the filenames and those file contents. the server is using host names that have not been previously configured. the address space may also have been expanded to a larger space, which would then allow the program to mask all content to an extent. the encryption key was not generated at all. what network traffic is being sent and received between the client and server is not known. the file authentication and encryption do not appear to be properly implemented. files may be inadvertently encrypted while the server is still on-line and accessible, and clients may not have the software necessary to decrypt them. and the further issues raised by an independent expert: the server is not using the kerberos 5 encryption type. if the server were to use kerberos 5 encryption, there would be zero chance of the client being able to decrypt the file contents. the server is not using multiple encryption keys for each file. in the event of the private key being compromised, the file could be decrypted. this issue would be more severe if the server exposed all the encryption keys to the client. all key values appear to be stored in plain text on the server. all browser-based interfaces are insecure due to improper handling of xhr (an xml http protocol that allows one-way data communication) 5ec8ef588b
