the vast majority of the challenge in shinobido comes from basic exploration. when you first start the game you’re given a map of the game world, and told to search for a key which will open a room containing a man in a wheelchair. in order to get to this man you need to find a lady. there’s only one other path to this man, and so you need to find a door that leads into that path. there’s a few ways to do this, but most involve sneaking past guards. if you can’t handle the challenge, you can cheat by renting the game and choosing the “prove yourself” mode. in this mode you get all the help you need to get through the game, with lots of checkpoints, and other minor assists. some of the extras are silly, like giving you a harpoon gun to skewer enemies and slowing down time to allow you to pounce on enemies. some are well placed, like letting you hide in a barrel for a minute to avoid getting spotted, and a few are genuinely useful, like letting you punch a hole through a wall.
shinobido definitely isn’t a game for the faint of heart, and the game design intentionally adds the frills for the most dedicated fans. while the stealth level is rather simple, it’s also fairly open. you can go anywhere and do almost anything, and the combat is surprisingly light. you can jump from ledge to ledge, and pretty much climb anywhere you like. the only real issue is that you can’t use a disguise, or hire a bodyguard. this limits your ability to be stealthy, and actually has a significant impact on gameplay. the fact that you can’t hire guards means that it’s much harder to get help to find the lady, and you’re forced to be quite literal about searching for the key, which in turn makes the game more difficult.
