The game was developed and written by Amplitude Studios, who offer a “Satisfaction Guarantee” to their fan base in case they don’t see their share of the current or future revenue of the game, including twice-yearly addition of the next expansion. There are presently no firm plans to restore the Steam «Balance Season» checklist for settling planets, for instance.

Endless Space 1 needed a lot more polish than Endless Space 2, and it was seen as the expansion with the most new mechanics. Since then, there has been no large influx of new features per se, but a lot of polish and revisions to existing systems and mechanics. The Endless Apocalypse expansion from May 2016 (Satisfaction Guarantee available) brought a huge amount of new content to the game.

The Endless Space 2 Director’s cut was going to be a new version with some of the things added to Endless Space 1, but the player base wanted more features. This version would have included those features plus a few others.

In July 2018, Amplitude Studios released a new blog titled an “Endless Inspiration” stating that Endless Space 2 was next on the list of expansions to receive a Director’s Cut release. At that time, the release date was set for Winter 2019.
