i had a business manager that handled all of my business. she was like, youll get your own modeling book, and i was like, okay. she told me to go to the ins, and i said, okay. a recruiter looked at me and said, okay, youre going to be a model. i was just trying to make enough money to live. i wasnt going to give up on anything. i got an apartment, so i just kept on going. the funny thing is that i went on a modeling show, and it got booked. modeling does a lot for you. it gets you in front of the right people. i started working, and i was getting gigs. i was like, this is going to help me get out of the apartment, so i kept going. i kept going up the ladder, and i had a really cool place, and i was making really good money.

werbowy: no, i would never make any part of the body look fake. i prefer honesty, because if youre just doing a photo shoot its just another thing on your resume. i was a dancer before my career as a model and part of that was you look like a monkey when you bend. i was getting older and my joints were getting stiff and i needed to start thinking about the way i could move. you dont go to a dance studio to lie on a bench and not move for a long time. id be lying if i said no to a job because im not going to sit there and do nothing. its a little bit of sport as well.
ive always thought of myself as being an authentic leader, one of the things you see with plus-size people is that theyre really good at talking to other people about their issues. even the people who arent really in the plus-size industry, their like, yes, i get you. its a bit more nuanced than i think people think, and its also like an awareness of the fact that youre not going to get any fucks, and youre gonna have to fight and fight. it seems simple, but in reality, it has taken us a long time to see that we are the ones making the choices. i remember being very frustrated when i first started and all the girls, they didnt even know what an agency was. then, one day, i was like, okay, i have a problem. i have a problem. i dont have an agency and im not getting booked. all these models are going to the agencies and theyre getting booked all the time and i do not know how to get booked. you know? its like, okay, i need to put myself in a position where i have to ask for an agency and that means, i need to start booking myself. the fact that women today are so relentlessly objectified is the root cause of the problem. on a level, women have become more than that. theyve become objects, not even subjects anymore. when you look at the wide-angled shots of these models, you can really see what theyre doing. theyre doing that thing where you project your insecurities onto them and thats really dangerous. i think thats the biggest change and we can change that. im determined to do that. its so important that i get back to the issues that are so important to me. ive always been very concerned about women. my mother was very concerned about women. she wouldnt let me have a boyfriend until i was 21, because she said that was the year you get pregnant. the day that i got my first boyfriend, she said, im going to have to ask you to leave. it was like a day of reckoning. i was so excited. i was like, youre allowed to have a boyfriend now! but the next day, she was like, i want you to leave. 5ec8ef588b
