The azygos vein is formed at the fusion point of the right subcostal vein and right ascending lumbar vein. There are two fusions: anterior and posterior. If the anterior fusion forms the azygos vein, then the posterior one fuses the right brachial vein. The azygos vein receives the right brachial vein, and it is formed from the confluence of the subclavian veins, the right cubital, and the right internal jugular veins (Cardenas; Gelsomino et al.; Vermeulen et al.). Of the 44 nerves studied, it was observed that 31 (70.45%) had this structure formed by the anterior fusion and the remaining 13 (29.55%) had the posterior fusion. It is noticeable that there were eight cases (18.18%) in which the azygos vein arose from the intercostal trunk and the lumbar veins. However, as we’ve said in the description of the oblique vein of the thorax, we also observed that there are eight cases (18.18%) in which the azygos vein arises from the intercostal trunk and lumbar veins, in the case of these cases, it was very small and we couldn’t seen it clearly in the pictures (Gray, Lockhart and Rouvire case).
Lockhart ( Hamilton) says that the left nerve comes out from the T8 and that there is not a relation between the origin of the nerve and the great structures nearby, as it was also observed in the present casuistic. That does not correspond with what occurs with the right nerve. On the present study, the right and the left nerves have a frequent origin from the ganglions T6 to T9, and the proximal branches have been found to be branches of the vagal nerve, below the vagal trunk. On the right side, it was found the frequency of the origin from the ganglions T8 to T9 in 21 cases (95,4%) and for the left side in 8 (36.3%).
