as these considerations suggest, designers are turning to the consumer to define the dimension of product quality they seek. they have become familiar with the market for a particular product; the consumer determines the appeal of the brand, and the brand determines the quality. in the end, therefore, we are in a one-way street: consumers affect quality because, ultimately, they are our agents. and the ultimate effect of this process is, of course, satisfaction. from this perspective, companies should investigate the consumer as a source of information, not a product of a marketing department that wants to make a sale.
