Changes for 2001: The list was shortened, to include only the 500 largest United States companies. The top 500 was the 500 firms with the highest sales during 1997. Some companies had joined and were dropped from the top 500 in 1997, and were brought back in 2001. The fortune 500 list goes back to 1955 and is a list of the world’s largest corporations by total revenue. The list was started by the American economist and writer Louis Brandeis. The F-list was started by Fortune magazine in 1956.  In 1980 Fortune decided to add the C-list, because it was important to see the behind-the-scenes performance of companies that were not public and thus did not make it onto the F-list. The following companies have been removed from the list: CDS&P Financial Corporation and its wholly owned subsidiary, CDI Corporation, CB&I Terminals Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary, Carolina Freight Carriers. Please note that these companies were removed from the list because they have gone bankrupt.
