the ym2612 custom sound source (csm) is still illegal and only allowed for fm emulation inside a genesis rom using the konami code. however i was able to create a working ym2612 sample which plays the classic sega genesis wacky sounds, so i decided to include in fmdrive 2612 a ym2612 sampler/editor for creating original sounds for both ym2612 emulators, ym2612 trackers and modern music production.
the ym2612 is a 16-bit soundchip widely used by yamaha, used in many dedicated fm synths, which is the reason why it was included in sega genesis in the first place.
if you can access to a genesis rom and have a ym2612, it’s absolutely worth installing fmdrive 2612 to have a ym2612 emu and editor (ymt is the best choice for ym2612 emulators), and fmdrive 2612 vsti to have a highly functional fm synth and be able to play the original sega genesis sounds and more.

fmdrive 2612 for linux is the professional and unique vsti software which is able to emulate six different sound chips of different series (genesis, fmsynth2, fmsynth4, portable, fm5/6, op2), and allows the user to install it to his/her pc for creating original music with these chips and also allows the user to create sound effects for game music development. the interface is designed for multi-platform use, so it is really easy to use. you can control the volume, use filters, delay, reverb, chorus effect, tremolo, as well as other classic effects of the six sound chips.

this huge instrument is able to play up to 20 channels at once. it supports the sega genesis of course, plus the msx sound, the sound chip of the fm5/6, the soft synth of the op2, and the sound of the m5, which are probably the most underestimated sound chips. but it also comes in handy for sound effects since it also supports the sound of the ym30 and the nec sound chip.
