with the show in its final act, the filmmakers are really going for the sort of family-friendly singalongs you often hear at the end of disney christmas features. which, in a way, they kind of are. columbus is the same guy who directed that recent disney singalong-fest, frozen, after all, and his efforts here are similarly slick and light-hearted. (its debatable whether the characters are actually meant to be singing, or just lip-syncing, but the point is moot in the context of this review.)
the whole thing plays much like a half-hearted pilot, with just enough christmas spirit to make it worth putting up with the fact that this movie is mostly comprised of sketches. columbus knows he cant stretch the material too far, so hes content to just play it straight, which works for the most part. but its also commendably loose, and ultimately quite enjoyable.
the movie does hit a few home runs, most notably with an almost overwhelming excitement about its time-traveling conceit. its also got a few nifty production decisions, like having the new england scenery be decorated in a holiday-themed way at the start of each act, and the centerpiece musical number, which really isnt much different from the dance numbers in other christmas shows. (there is also a little more variety in the set designs: more than the last two movies.)
