Technical documentation? Is not even an original part of Delphi (as you said). I don’t know what you mean by developer availablity, time it takes, or lack of skill. Delphi is reliable, its just a business model problem.
The sad thing about this is that Emb went one step further by not even letting me have a copy of the Delphi 2010 activation file that the old version was based upon. Of course, that means a new activation file had to be compiled. As with all Emb products, the activation file relies upon the Embedding Service, which is disabled in Delphi 2010 (among other things) to “save” the required RAM for the activation of the new product. Is it any wonder that the Emb product page shows a zero on the “RAM used” summary panel? How can you expect to charge $ for such a product that’s so ram-hungry? Emb’s own documentation clearly states that the new activation file is a “hybrid” — half Win32 and half VCL, which means it has to both deal with the old activation file as well as activate the new interface.
If you’re curious about what the activation file did to your system, you can get back an old copy of your D2007 activation file from http://www.embcomponents.com/ and see if it works under 2008 and 2010. For D2007, you should be able to just import to D2010. Otherwise, you’ll need to re-install it.
I have never needed to use that crap software, nor will I ever need to. I’ll happily stick to the open source license for Delphi, whether 3 or 7. C:\Users[user]\AppData\Local\Temp\[file]\Emb\[product].del\dfm\bld\x86\[file]\vcl_cfm.exe is the dfm file that’s the Delphi executable. You need to have that in order to activate Delphi 2010. For D2007, you’ll need to copy it from C:\Users[user]\AppData\Local\Temp\[file]\Emb\[product].del\dfm\bld\x86\[file]\ to the Delphi D2007 directory.
