Lightroom 5 is a solid improvement, and is interesting for me personally; I’m glad to see such a big update to an app I’ve been using for a long time. However, why is it so much more expensive? The price is about the same as the previous version of this tool, even though it requires much more RAM, disk space, and bandwidth. The previously free and open-source counterpart, Darktable, is actually even more than that now; it now costs $37.79. The initial cost is actually not too painful, but the cost of the major upgrade every year is just disastrous; I’m spending more money simply by upgrading each year. I also don’t like the fact that I have to spend more money to make my own RAW conversions happen. Google has just added more and more RAW related tools to their free (as in “speech”) tools, but they cannot afford to do that for all of us.
