The cast of Legions are pretty good. Combat and construction are fun as ever, but the grand campaign is better-worthwhile than its predecessor. The online mode supports up to six people in a platoon in battle and can serve up four different difficulty settings. Who needs more than that? Total War: Rome II is here at last, and it’s pretty good.
We finally have Total War: Rome II, and it’s a beautiful game. It’s a little buggy here and there, but I don’t have a single complaint about the overall package. The multiplayer is rock solid, the campaign is excellent, and everything about this Total War feels like it’s part of the same series.
And at last, where has the tutorial gone. The design focus of Total War has always been on the combat and the general mechanics of the gameplay, where the actual tutorials (player aids) are often considered an annoyance. The writing of the tutorial is also terrible, and Total War: Rome II is far worse than either of its predecessors. Here is where the game really falls down. The tutorial is far too wordy and lacks a voiceover, as well as important contextual information which could be easily grabbed by a player.
So, they are the most unnecessary part of a Total War game. Fortunately, I have never seen so much nonsense in my life. Anyway, the tutorial is horrible, and if you want to get this game to your recommended setting, you are going to have to play a single game all over again. So, I must say, Total War: Shogun 2 is my favourite game of this series.
Of course, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that this is in fact the grand campaign, and the battles in the game are, well, grand. No matter which unit you call your own, you’ll fight some terrific battles, from the desperate bayonet charges of the French into the deadly cat-and-mouse game of generals as they throw out pincer moves against armies from the back of the battle. Napoleon is a particularly brutal (and very small) game, with all your generals getting just a single pool of health. If a single general gets wounded, that’s it, you’re done.
Total War: Warhammer 2 was a direct response to the large amount of complaints about the strategic gameplay of Total War: Rome 2. While Rome 2 was really great, people were unhappy about a couple of issues, such as the fact that there is no way to turn the game off, and there is a lot to do on the tactical level and no way to spend money to upgrade your game. Warhammer 2 fixes all that. It’s a fully revised Total War: Rome 2 with an entirely new look, an improved campaign and lots of new content, all of which is beautifully showcased in this game.
