Adobe Photoshop has a reputation for being difficult to master. But it’s not as difficult as some other programs. In fact, it’s the opposite. It’s the most user-friendly of proprietary software systems, and one of the most used editing software packages today.

One great feature of Photoshop is that it allows the data to remain unchanged even during changes. If you look at the below image, notice that the order of the photos was not changed. Also note that changes are not affected by the settings in previous image.

When you open an image in Photoshop, there is a reason for the reason to keep the image data safe and undamaged. If you apply a change in one version of the file, without saving anywhere, you can go back to a previous version and the new, changed image is still there.

The key additions to Lightroom 5 are retouching and the enhanced augmented reality features. Color Tap provides a very easy way to correct the colors in a photo. Together, these two new features streamline the workflow. You can no longer go from any part of the Lightroom desktop to the Develop module. All you can do is tap Color Tap, open a left panel to the Curves panel, apply the adjustments and then tap Back. The Lightroom 5 also comes with Direct Select, which allows you to select a color or area of a photo, and it also can also be used to select and copy/paste. The new features also allow for much improved management and organization of images.

The autofind mode is a cool tool that will find all the faces in the image very quick, which is especially useful for large archive catalogs. Of course, the search option is still there, as well.

AirPlay 2 can be used to stream the photos to a new group of devices. Also, the update shipped with the enhanced smart previews. Although I’m a bit surprised that the ‘Safety First’ feature is gone as I had used it while editing. The new Invert feature is also very neat. A new self-timer has been added that acts as an ‘exposure meter.’ The Power Windows mode can be switched to Position Camera Using Nothing Else for when you don’t want to rely on connectivity for positioning the camera, although most of the time, it’s better to first set the camera’s position and focus thanks to the Live Histogram, extra exposure controls, and Guides that help you see exactly what you’re missing. Exposure compensation is now supported for the Histogram, too, while Focus is now possible inline with the histogram. As I said above, Lightroom now displays RAW capture. Finally, I did notice that the OS X version of Lightroom 5 crashes a little more than it did with Lightroom 4.3. However, I still don’t recommend that Windows users upgrade to anything other than Windows 10, simply because it is more stable and is already supported (as far as I know). There are also some workflow changes that were introduced with the new version: Bulb mode is now available for my favorite type of picture, known as a ‘snapshot,’ although it’s obvious that there needs to be some improvements because that particular feature isn’t used enough. Snap picks is available as is a sidecar image, but one that I can now drag around to where I want and store for later if necessary. The main new feature in this version of Lightroom is the new size gauge. For photographers, both JPEGs and DNGs have one, although the DNG override feature is still defective. The catalog thumbnails will display the current setting, so no more guessing.

What to Watch Out For: Since Photoshop is a great tool, it’s easy to find tutorials and videos online. However, there can be a lot of information out there. If you find yourself not knowing how to do something, just take a deep breath and think about what you’re trying to do. It’s easy to get lost in the cloud of information and don’t figure out how to get back to your goal.
