The final level of sequence is a group. A group is an object that contains other objects. To perform an edit on the group of objects, press Ctrl + D. To create a group of other groups, choose File → New → Group from the menu.

For example, Lightroom doesn’t start with a blank slate. As soon as you import your images, it starts to put them to work. Because it handles hundreds and thousands of images in one go, loading them from a large folder into memory is not a problem. On a quad-core laptop with 8GB of RAM, loading 12,000 images, each with 10MB of associated metadata, would take about 13 minutes. But Lightroom does not need to load 12,000 images in that 13-minute time span. We start with the 8,000 most recent images (plus, of course, all those in the Export folder). After all, the images that take more than a few seconds to load are those ones that already contain metadata, such as keywords. For those images, we also need to deliver that metadata. And, truth be told, the remaining images take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or so to load them as well. So, Lightroom is not trying to load the entire contents of all the images that can be managed for you in once go. Instead, we start off with the 8,000 most recent images and work our way through them. We are using a rather typical arrangement of connecting to a server (and some intermediate storage) to download a more recent copy of the images ahead. This is, of course, non-destructive, in the sense that it’s not actually changing the primary copy until the images are re-downloaded. In my experience, Lightroom is quite good at balancing memory usage with file size. (I regard a 12MB image as a “heavy” image, which is why I have to wait a little bit to open it after downloading it from the server.) However, it also takes RAM pretty damned hard for every image downloaded. In addition to that, I feel that it also uses a fair bit of processor cycles. That being said, I am sure that the developers of Lightroom are aware of performance issues, and that the performance gets better over time.

After you install the program, unless you’re using an older version it’s easy to right click on a layer and go to the “Image > Adjustments > Brightness and Contrast” tab, then you can adjust the brightness and contrast of the image. You can also set the brightness and contrast of an entire image or from anywhere in the image with the current “Crop” and “Rotate” options.
