[ALBUM] JUJU – YOU.rar

the irony is that the album was never released in the u.s. on the other hand, the album is quite easy to find on the internet. and its certainly one of the rare ones of its kind, and one of the most original albums that i have. it really is worth listening to.

the title track is the sole cut on both the original u.s. and japanese lp and it is the album opener. its a song about a murder, and the title refers to the boot print that left a bloody imprint on the the victim. the track is a sort of rockabilly-like tune that has a lot of soul, with a strong rhythm, and a nice feel, like a blues tune turned on its head. its a pretty strong track, and a good opener for the album.

i am a big fan of this amazing band, which is why i was quite excited to hear about this record. since they started i have seen them perform in close to 20 times now and they are great. when they released their debut album “rivers” in 2016 it was a bit of a surprise to me. i had heard some of the material but wasn’t really expecting much from it. so it was quite a pleasant surprise when i got the chance to hear the whole thing and i was immediately blown away. they are true “progressive” rockers who know their way around a good song, but on this debut they also show that they have a lot of ambition and vision. the songs are full of interesting and beautiful melodies and there are some really interesting guitar passages and vocal performances. i’m no expert in their style but i can see that this is definitely an album that i have to keep on my list. you can listen to it here:

the first thing to note about this album is that it was recorded in an extraordinary context: a flight of 10 days, between london, new york and paris, during which the musicians rehearsed and performed a new piece for the first time. they only had one chance to capture their performance on tape, so they recorded their performance from start to finish, using the same equipment and technicians. it is an incredible achievement, especially given the great number of hours involved. once you hear this album, youre never likely to forget its magic: the echoing space of the instrumentation, the drenching moments of the playing, the music that just seems to go on forever. its not possible to imitate this, but the band was playing the original version of the piece, recorded before this tour, so it was probably closer to the finished album. all the musicians, including drummer keith carradine (this was his first recording) were still in their teens, and the album was the first they had made as a band. in the ’60s, dizzy gillespie’s live quintet was the most powerful, kinetic unit of its day. it was also one of the most important, and immeasurably influential, jazz ensembles. but between the ’70s and ’80s it lost its steam and its members went their separate ways. the you album is a reunion of the original quintet, recorded in 1981 at the yoshi’s jazz club in san francisco. listeners will immediately recognize the familiar veneer of the gillespie sound, and the joy the band took in playing together. but the album also features the pairing of drummer carradine with pianist jack dejohnette, who had been gillespie’s drummer before becoming a pioneer in the fusion movement. as much as i love the gillespie sound, i like this version of it even more–especially when carradine is partnered with dejohnette, who can play with the same almost-light-bulb intensity of gillespie himself. 5ec8ef588b
