The study reported here quantifies the likelihood that these potential impacts are occurring, as well as their magnitude. The analysis is based on extreme impacts, i.e. the most extreme value for one or more key parameters (e.g. carbon emissions or dissolved oxygen depletion) that are defined below, and “average” impacts, i.e. the average value for one or more key parameters. Background Nitrogen and phosphorous pollution can increase into drinking-water supplies from well water due to oil and gas operations. This is particularly likely when such operations draw down surface water supplies for drinking-water and disposal of wastewater. In many areas of Texas, oil and gas wastewater can be disposed of by injecting it into abandoned injection wells, or by disposal in operational injection wells, or in surface or subsurface impoundments. Both injection wells and impoundments can cause atmospheric impacts such as CO2 output and water solubility. Injection wells can also potentially cause effects within the supply basin such as subsidence and the increased cost of water supply. Fracturing of shallow wells can increase production and reduce costs for both oil and gas drilling and other industries.
