    : In Defence of Combat Dragons The party started this campaign with a pretty big roleplaying goal: explore mysterious sites in the American wilderness, solve mysteries, and of course, maybe get a little defeated. Now the game is in its fourth session, we’re living through an intense period of play, and they’ve already broken that goal down into their first order of business: The Lost Mine Complex. A while ago I’d warned some players about this whole taking downtime thing because it doesn’t always go as smoothly as the most optimistic players expect. At this point, I’m happy enough to let a couple weeks slide without unraveling some victory condition that’s already been winnable. I just need to be sure that we can keep moving forward as a group without someone, somewhere grasping for tiebreakers just because we used downtime. For play support, I went back to Carcosa and pulled out a handful of copies of the in-house Pathfinder Campaign Setting. I figured I might as well apply all the sandboxy-ness of Carcosa to my actual sandbox, even if I’d played with those rules before. I’ll circle back to that later. For now, let’s talk about combat. The first big change I made when using Carcosa beyond what amounts to my standard game of Pathfinder was the expected range of skills and attributes. In Carcosa, they fall like this: Carcosa: Leadership 5, Athletics +1, Wits +1, Stealth +2, the ability to have only -1 on any test, and the ability to improve their Wits. As best I recall, Pathfinder powers have been implemented with is more like a +1 rather than a doubling. To parse the new reality of skill and attribute bonuses a bit, let’s look at just how well a character can reasonably expect to do during a “normal” Pathfinder adventure. A bandit castling a wanted character in a poorly-lit room requires Tactics. A rival’s henchman grabs for the blademaster’s sword A group of invisible figures attacks everyone from the back of a wagon, killing a large number of others.
