    • Tha Davis Express The Tha Davis Express was a New Orleans rapper, DJ, producer and recording artist that plays a key role in the 1990s house music movement in New Orleans. Throughout his career, Davis released albums like The Guidance and Elements of Style. He is also credited as one of the first hybrid hip hop artists and a pioneer of electronic dance music. Davis released the first rap album in New Orleans and even the first rap album by a black artist. The album was referred to as “rap opera.” This made Davis a pioneer and major influence to early New Orleans rapper Lil’ Keke. Davis’ album also sparked the movement New Orleans brought the beat back in the 90’s. Career His first professional release, Simply The Best, featured fellow New Orleans rapper Lil’ Keke, and included tracks like “Stand Up and Live” and “You Got It (Got to Give It to You).” It was recorded in his childhood bedroom. Simply The Best was recorded in 1988 at Davis’ aunt Mary Keene’s record store at 1120 Dumaine Street in New Orleans. Davis was just 10 years old at the time of recording and barely understood what he was doing. He gained fame in the area after his debut album was featured on Sound of New Orleans. When asked about the journey of the album from recording to release, the idea changed from making a mixtape to creating a record. Along with The Guidance, Simply The Best was Davis’ first step into the music industry.
