We will study whether the proportion of RBCs is altered in adults with ADH, and whether ADH is blunted in the presence of increased RBCs. We will study whether the magnitude of ADH is blunted in adult patients with Euvolemic Hypertension (EH), a condition characterized by development of edema and hyponatremia in the absence of increased RBCs. And lastly, we will measure RBCs during and after acute administration of water, or saline, and ascertain whether RBCs produce changes in the plasma concentration of ADH. The latter studies will be of relevance to those who determine the mechanisms of RBC-produced fluid shifts, and how this process is regulated in CKD. They also aim to clarify whether RBCs contribute to salt and water retention during acute and chronic changes in ECF volumes. In the pathogenesis of ADH, edema formation is accompanied by increased plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP). Whether this increment in AVP is caused by a mechanical release of AVP from RBCs, a change in the concentration of AVP within RBCs or both, is not clear. We will also measure the
