Nazi’s war in the East brought them into conflict with the Soviets and the earlier execution of German forces in retaliation for the Katyń massacre in 1940; however, the Soviet forces did not launch an invasion as soon as this event took place. The Afrika Korps and the Italians had conquered nearly all of North Africa in World War II, and in 1942 they had also occupied most of Yugoslavia. The German forces thus controlled large amounts of territory, giving them a substantial military advantage.
In the summer of 1942, the Italians occupied portions of East Africa before the arrival of General Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps in November that year. Between 1942 and 1943, the Allies began to build up forces in the region. The British force – accompanied by French and Indian troops – began landing in October 1942, intending to drive out the Axis forces and then create a supply base to aid the advancing Allied invasion of Sicily. The operation, known as Operation Torch, was an amphibious landing that captured the port of Casablanca (French Morocco), occupied the French colony of French Equatorial Africa and French Corsica. Italian forces took part in the effort at the cost of over 30,000 casualties and the loss of a large amount of equipment.[43]
On 10 March 1943, Generalmajor Eberhard von Mackensen’s 6th Army, supported by the Italian Ariete Armoured Division, defeated the 2nd French Armored Division near Fuka (near El-Kef Tunis) at the Second Battle of El-Alamein. Hitler ordered him to hold the coastline at a crucial point in the Mediterranean war. This battle was the turning point of the North African campaign. The Allies slowly pushed eastwards through the deserts towards the Mediterranean seaway, which led to a victory at El-Alamein and into Egypt.[44]
