The Eastern Realm expansion was released in December 2018.[106] The Eastern Realm added four new settlements, alongside 20 new units, five new technologies and five new occupations.[108] These include wood, food, iron, coal, wheat, rye, cabbage, butter, eggs, wine, leather, grain, chickens, sheep, cows, salt and seaweed.[109] Unlike the original version of The Eastern Realm set on the coast of the Anatolian peninsula, the new expansion uses farmed staples such as wheat, rye, and cabbage to settle the hinterland. By the time the final settlement of the campaign has been formed, bread is regularly baked in the village bakery (introduced in The Settlers IV), butter is churned in a village dairy, and a village pond produces eggs.[110][111]
From the outset, it was clear to Blue Byte that the expansion had to feature three new kinds of settlement and five new occupations. Tracking the player’s settlements with the footprint-tracking tool, it was found that in the base game the player settled for towns quickly, then cities, then trade. Blue Byte postulated that the opening screen of the base game gave the impression that if the player did not build a settlement before three days had passed, the game would instead abandon the player’s game save and restart at the Sculpture Corner. This decision proved to be good: as the original Settlers launch and with the first few expansions, the user’s settlement was abandoned all but once every three days (with the exception of The Settlers VI, where it was abandoned every four days). This would make space in which to build the cities of the expansion. As a result, The Eastern Realm introduced hundreds of new buildings and items – over twice as many as the base game – that would be integral to the success of the new settlements.[110]
The Eastern Realm expansion introduces two civics trees to cater for all players in a typical Settlers game. These enable players to use the new settlements in two different ways. The first civic tree becomes available when the player has formed both a town and a trade centre. Players may select from four different rivers and two different forts as their starting settlement, and populate the city with the appropriate goods. In the centre of the settlement sits a library building at which players may train an occupation.
