The original game managed to offend numerous Command figures and die-hard fans and is considered to be one of the worst games of all time by many gamers. This problem carries over into the second expansion pack, as it was originally then-General Kerestine’s last order to the Soviet troops, Exo-Norma, to rectify the “tyrant’s” “mistake” from the previous game. Red Alert 2 was accompanied by a budget cut, with the levels being recycled from the first game, and the top-down tactical control of the first game was replaced with an over-the-shoulder isometric view of the tactical map. Red Alert 3, like its predecessor, is a very fast-paced game with a level of constant action. The game features the addition of robots and the return of the Rush Hour faction, who were introduced as a civilian faction in Red Alert 2, but were never able to gain any traction. Three special units were added, the Submarine (based on the Pinisi), the Specter (which is based on the S-75), and the Metro, a tank-like vehicle. Most of these units are designed to be variants of the main units.

When the player first enters the game, they are given the option of choosing between a “Standard” game and a “Eddie” option, named after the game’s producer. The Eddie game mode allows the player to choose their side from a set of options, which include the Allied and the Soviet. Unlike the Red Alert 2 campaign, the standard campaign of this game has more of an open-ended design, allowing the player to chose to do whatever they want, instead of sticking to a strict storyline as seen in the Red Alert 2 campaign.
