The 12th Floor Elevators were a vehicular-less monster and a proto-rock band from Texas in the early ’60s that personified garage-punk; they played on a local FM with their drummer’s dad in his pickup truck. It was our introduction to funk and soul, it was a rich soundtrack for a band that handled them…
…And it wasn’t only funk. It was a danceable and radical funk. It had a touch of psychedelia to it and, surprisingly, a hint of wah-wah, and that was about it. The opening riff on 1982’s O.K. Enough was simply a guitar played in a silky manner that echoed Hendrix and Cosimano had a harder edge to it.
